How to Meal Plan for a Family of Four (Without Losing Your Mind)
3 min read · Grocerplan
Feeding a family every night is less about willpower and more about having a system. The families who stick with meal planning almost all do the same handful of things: they plan on a set day, they plan around a few reliable dinners, and they shop from one combined list instead of three scattered trips. Here's how to set that up in about 20 minutes a week.
1. Pick a plan day and protect it
Choose one day — Saturday morning and Sunday evening are the most common — and make it your standing planning slot. You're doing three quick tasks: deciding the week's dinners, turning them into a grocery list, and placing (or scheduling) the order. Breaking those into one short block is what keeps the whole thing from sliding.
2. Start with 5–6 dinners, not 21 meals
Trying to plan every breakfast, lunch, and dinner is how people burn out in week two. Plan dinners first — they're the meals that actually require a decision — and let breakfasts and lunches repeat or lean on leftovers. Aim for five or six dinners and leave a night for leftovers or takeout.
Pick from meals the whole table will actually eat. Our family-friendly recipes collection is built exactly for this: crowd-pleasing dinners that scale cleanly from four to six to eight servings, each with the per-serving cost shown up front.
3. Scale to your household and watch the cost per serving
A recipe written for four doesn't help a family of six. The trick is to size every recipe to your actual household so the grocery list comes out right — no doubling in your head at the store. Every recipe on Grocerplan shows its real cost per serving, so you can see a week land in your budget before you shop, not after.
If money is the main constraint, plan from the budget recipes collection — the lowest cost-per-serving meals in the catalog — and let the cheaper nights balance out the pricier ones.
4. Build ONE combined grocery list
The single biggest time-saver is aggregation: instead of a list per recipe, you want one deduplicated list where "2 onions here" and "1 onion there" become "3 onions." That's the difference between a 40-line list and a wandering trip through every aisle twice. Grocerplan does this automatically and removes anything you've marked as already in your pantry.
5. Keep a short rotation and let it grow
You do not need infinite variety. Most families rotate 15–20 dinners they trust and swap in something new every couple of weeks. Save the winners, quietly drop the ones nobody asked for again, and your rotation improves on its own.
